GET CLASSICALLY EDUCATED

Dialectic Stage Classical Homeschool Program (Ages 12–13)

A classical homeschool program for ages 12–13 designed to cultivate logic, structured argument, and confident critical thinking.

What Is the Dialectic Stage?

The Dialectic stage is the second phase of the classical Trivium, designed for students ages 12–13 who are ready to move beyond memorization and into why. At this age, students naturally begin questioning, debating, and pushing back — and classical education is built for exactly that. Rather than suppressing that energy, the Dialectic stage channels it into structured logic, analysis, and reasoned argument.

What Your Student Will Learn

In GCE’s Dialectic program, students develop the skills that form the bridge between elementary learning and high school-level scholarship. Through weekly mentor-led discussions, students learn to analyze texts, identify logical fallacies, construct written arguments, and engage confidently with ideas across history, literature, and writing. By the end of the Dialectic stage, students aren’t just absorbing information — they’re thinking critically about it.

What Does a Dialectic Year Look Like?

A typical Dialectic year at GCE is structured around twice-weekly, mentor-led discussions — one session focused on humanities (history, literature, and writing) and one on mathematics. Students read primary and secondary source texts, discuss them with their mentor and a small group of peers, and complete written work between sessions. Over the course of 30–32 weeks, they build a consistent practice of reading carefully, writing clearly, and thinking out loud.

Sample topics and texts include ancient and medieval history, classical mythology, the essays of C.S. Lewis, introductory logic and fallacy identification, and foundational grammar in writing. The work is genuinely challenging but always structured — your student won’t be left to figure it out alone.

Is the Dialectic Stage Right for My Student?

If your child is 12–13 and starting to push back on what they’re told — asking “why?” and “how do you know?” — that’s the Dialectic stage showing up. GCE’s program is designed for exactly this moment. Students who thrive here are curious, willing to work hard, and ready for mentor relationships that take their ideas seriously. Placement is always a conversation: if you’re unsure whether Dialectic 1 or 2 is the right fit, our free discovery call is the best first step.
